Is this website suitable for youth? Like young illustrator wannabes...I’m 17 this year but I’m not looking for jobs etc...

  • I’m a freelance videographer and photographer who’s just getting started as of March 2020, in my personal experience I’ve been able to meet a BUNCH of people from here to do shoots with and network with, it’s helped me grow my portfolio, even if it’s free work it’s been so great to meet other creatives through it. I think if you put out enough asks for small jobs eg. “Would anyone like me to illustrate X for them?” And see what responses you get back, you can grow your portfolio without having to commit to a full-time role at a company and don’t need that big pressure of not having much experience.
  • I don't think it's not suitable – it just depends on what you're looking to get out of it. It's a good app for networking and asking other illustrators and creatives questions and suggestions you know will be backed by various backgrounds and years of experience. Some of the insight you can find on this app I've struggled to find anywhere else.
If you're looking for an internship to figure more things out about being an illustrator firsthand, though, I think you should look at other platforms too. This is an interesting and useful app, but it's really hard to land an placement because of the strong, talented competition – even if you're not looking at it as a job.
Every once in a while you'll find call outs on here that could be useful to you: magazines and zines looking for submissions to publish post about their themes and you can participate (usually for free) and see what a brief looks like for yourself, on top of possibly having your work published as well.
Another powerful tool for someone in your shoes could be the fact you can publish your artwork as projects and then ask the community for comments, tips and criticisms to help you grow and elaborate a more powerful style.
I think this app can be a very useful tool, you just have to figure out what you want from it and take some time to get used to it! x
