Recent English literature and creative writing grad. Any advice on getting into the publishing/writing/journalism industry?

  • Start publishing your own writing. And share it with people of interest - get creative with how you do that - find peoples' emails, their social media handles - send them samples of your work.
  • Hi Leanne! I think a lot of it depends on what industry you'd like to get into. Personally, I kind of stumbled upon a writing/journal position. I had originally found random internship positions in the Music industry--the industry in which i was interested in working in--and one of those positions happened to entail copywriting. So by the time I applied into an internship position with a "bigger" company that ended up being mainly writing and editorials, I already had my foot in the door both in the music industry & in writing experience... therefore making me more "Attractive" to this company. Although my way is a lot less structured and heavily on the unpaid side of journalism and writing, I would say to pick a particular industry that interests you and search for writing positions & internships there. A lot of companies are looking for copywriters as of late so I would also reccommend getting into copywriting just to get the experience & make a little bag, but still search for those specific writing jobs that you want + finding freelance positions to build your portfolio. Here is also a website I just recently discovered with some tips on how to get freelance work: https://blackfreelance.com/find-work/
