Should emerging artists / creatives pay to have their work exhibited / published? @Pip Jamieson

  • @Tom Gravestock They dont ask for any commission from any sales you might produce, and that in turn makes me wonder how much effort theyd actually put into "getting your stuff out there" ...??(logistics/curation/marketing/opening nights, etc).
  • @Jimena Bellina Ha! Sorry. I did jump to conclusions there. As for the gallery, two thousand pounds for a bit of wall? Not in my lifetime. Do they ask for commission on the sale as well? I think the time of galleries is long over.

  • @Tom Gravestock LOL! Way to jump to conclusions - I was asking this because 1. A gallery emailed me about wanting to exhibit my work pretty much "out of the blue" and I thought that winning the lottery might be more of a probability than that actually happening. When I went to investigate said gallery, theyre happy to "promote" emerging talent, such as myself, because, I actually do do something - just as long as I fork up aboout 2000 Sterling for a piece of their wall. The same said gallery has a pretty solid following and seems to be doing ok with this way of "working". Aside them, lots of publications Ive come across seem pretty happy to publish your work as long as you pay them to do so. 2. I attended the "How to Find a Mentor" webinar on The Dots today where part of the excercise was to post a question that had been keeping us up a night. Have a great one!
  • Hell no! What an elitist bit of nonsense. Why not turn the industry into a two tier system? One for those with money and one for those without. You sound like someone snooping around to find a nway to make money off of young artists. Try making something.
