Tips for increasing the reach of my book?

Since publication on 3rd July 2022 and a subsequent marketing push around 12th July, "The Caterpillar Shivered: A Curious Collection of Cartoon Critters" has sold 49 copies online, a small amount of cash sales from myself to local people, and is due to be stocked in 3 locations in my nearest town.

I am wondering how best to increase the awareness surrounding the book. I am considering getting in touch with independent bookstores further away from my location, but feel like there's more I could be doing. I currently own all publishing rights , having purchased an ISBN and created my own imprint for publishing through IngramSpark. I'm sure that would be a dealbreaker if I weren't shop the book around to various established publishing houses, but am thinking this could also be a route to wider attention.

  • @Matthew Hill ah yeah I've had that experience with contacting some local magazines. They make it as hard as possible to speak to anyone. I did a launch event for a little book I made at a local library once which was quite fun. There are quite a few small press events around the UK which can be a fun way to meet people and get feedback. You can book a desk to sell your stuff.
  • @Tom Pearce I've tried local newspapers, but these days they're owned by a company called Reach PLC what are more interested in likes and follows than local news. Their response to my approach was "feel free to leave a visitor post on our Facebook page, good "
  • Local magazines is a great way to go about it. Have you maybe thought of connecting with book reviewers that already have a following that can look at your book? Relevant podcasts could be another alternative.
Book fairs can be another good way to put it out there more. Or sending a few copies to local libraries…
Just seeing what stick here but “creating awareness” is equal as broad!
Looks like a really nice book, good luck!
  • Could you get an interview in a local magazine? Think of an angle for an interview, what's the hook / story and pitch it to them all.
