Ways into a creative industry (production/events) without direct industry experience? Any advice would be appreciated!

I have experience in project management, busines development, partnerships, sales and I have worked in live events/hospitality in the past. I would really love a challenging but creative environment for my next role. I have previously worked in a start-up environment managing cross functional teams of up to 100 people, scaling and launching 8 commercial sites.

Comfortable reporting into C-level execs and managing big client accounts.

If anyone would be willing to offer advice on a couple of career paths tagged I would really appreciate it.

I am exploring events, music and film production.

  • Hi Aoife,
I think it very much depends on where you really want to be.
Film production is a very different environment to events/music, so you might want to aim for one or the other.
From what you've said above, I think corporate events might be an easier step over than say music events and festivals (which are still quite maverik until you get above a certain scale), but you never know who needs what, so I wouldn't rule it out.
If you're struggling to get any interest due to lack of recent experience (if that's the case), you could always try a local cultural venue if you have one, they're often on the look out for volunteers with good transferable skills, or local authorities sometimes run venues and annual festivals.
    Hope that helps!
