What will the future of magazines be?

As we in the magazine industry come back from furlough, it is safe to say magazines will have changed. But how would you like to see free and paid titles change in the post-covid world? What features and stories would you be most interested in reading about in the weeks and months after we start publishing again?

  • Hey Henry,

I'll be honest, I came here as much to read other answers as to offer my own thoughts!

I've been working for and alongside major publications in the luxury fashion market for the best part of ten years. In that time I think this has been a question that publishers have been asking, and not suitably addressing, throughout.

With constant pivots; the expansion and contraction of social teams; rising multi-disciplinary positions; a shift to video and podcasts; diversification of revenue streams; an erosion of the "old-guard"; the rise, fall and rise again of niche publications; digitisation and resurrection of print; and a rethink of the role of EIC - there's a lot to ponder!

I'm lucky enough to have found my place in the magazine world through video, which certainly seems to be a medium that will stick around for some time to come. Yet I still open a number of workshops and talks with two questions - what is a video? and what is a magazine? And normally get met with silence!

If there is anything we know now, it's that Covid-19 has brought this conversation into sharp focus, and publishers can't ignore the more existential questions surrounding their business model and their final product - a magazine.

I'll be keeping an eye on this one for everyone else's thoughts.

    Best,

    Luke
