Young designers ... what are the burning questions you have about making it in the industry? What would you look for in a mentor?

I'm looking into starting up a mentoring and workshops programme. I'm a twenty year veteran, and am passionate about helping the next generation through, and offering guidance in developing their careers.

Be it portfolio feedback, software hacks, design principles, industry tips, pitfalls of the business, creative strategy, how to get a job, find clients, deal with the ups and downs ... I want to be there as your 'go to'.

Any insight into what troubles you guys within the industry would be very helpful as a starting point for research.

  • @Aleah Davies Hi there Aleah, thanks for your response.@Aleah

The points you make are quite common ones, and in fact, all of them are issues that I faced too very early on in my career.

The interesting one is about the lack of commercially relevant learning in higher education. That is one of my motives for attempting this in the first place. It seems not much has changed since I was a graduate in 2002.

Lots of blue sky and pretty thinking, yet very little in the way of meat on the bones of commercial execution and actually learning the trade. It was something I definitely suffered with as a youngster coming through.

I'll note them down and adapt my material as such. Thank you so much
Hang in there and keep going.

I am living proof that you can really fuck it up early doors and make all the wrong moves, go right around the houses, and wind up established, with a top reputation in the industry.

I'm an old man now, I feel like everyone's grandad thse days when I work in other studios! ;-)

You however, have time and raw talent on your side. Do not despair!

Feel free to connect, and I'll try my best to keep you posted as and when I'm ready to launch my platform.

All the best, and in the mean time - good luck with it.
  • Hi!

I'm a recent graduate and things I struggled with after finishing Uni were:
    • Finding a Job with no 'studio experience'
    • Pricing freelance jobs
    • Confidence !!! Confidence in my own work, and pricing accordingly
Also finding my 'niche'. We didn't explore enough avenues at University!

    Hope this answer helps.
