Modern Art has been around for 160 years with Abstraction (the first point at which there was a departure from any kind of recognizable subject matter on a canvas) for over 120 years. So what makes Abstraction unique now? In the dawn of the AI age when a maker can create a piece of writing, a design concept or art piece using technology that scours the internet and delivers what we need (give or take) in a matter of seconds? The answer is exactly that, the choice not to do so.

‘Abstract Perspectives’, the new summer group exhibition at BSMT Gallery will, through a burst of colour, celebrate the resilience and relevance of the artist in the digital age. Abstract Art simplifies forms, they are schematized and broken down into components through geometric shapes or gestural marks. It is about the process, the ‘artist’s hand’- the hours spent hand mixing colours slight shades apart, measuring and calculating or cutting, or allowing a brush stroke to be only a brush stroke. Abstract art is often seen as carrying a moral dimension through this spiritual or zen-like practice that has long been revered and it continues to do so.

‘Abstract Perspectives’ features the work of Argiris Ser, Carl Cashman, Charley Peters, Darry Perier, Florence Blanchard, Inkteraktiv, Mark McClure, Matt Dosa, Nick Grindrod, PIICASA, Sam Owen Hull, Soda and Zoe Anker. It honours those keeping the tactility of art alive and salutes the pioneers who aren't afraid to defy the norms through the pursuit of a human rendering of perfection or perfect chaos . The exhibition serves as a reminder that there will always be a place for the human touch in the art world, regardless of the technological advancements around us.

‘Abstract Perspectives’ opens with a private view on July 27th (6pm to 9pm) and runs until the 20th August. Drinks for the opening night are generously sponsored by our good friends at 3am Brewery.
