Andrea Chénier by Umberto Giordano
Organised by Southbank Centre
Follow the tragic life of Parisian poet and political journalist André-Marie de Chénier in an opera fuelled by revolution, presented by the Chelsea Opera Group.
Umberto Giordano (1867 – 1948) enjoyed a solid reputation as an opera composer during his lifetime, but Andrea Chénier is alone among his works to have achieved a lasting place in the operatic repertoire.
Based loosely on the life of André-Marie de Chénier, a Parisian poet and political journalist who was swept up in the libertarian fervour of the French Revolution, the work received its premiere in Milan in 1896.
