Join artist Lindsey Mendick and Curatorial Assistant Charlotte Flint for a discussion about the role of art making as a form of relief, catharsis and comfort.
The discussion will explore Mendick’s own artistic practice and the work of Laure Pigeon (1882-1965), Madge Gill (1882-1961) and Aloïse (1886-1964), three female Art Brut artists, whose work is on display in the exhibition.
This event has been programmed to coincide with Jean Dubuffet: Brutal Beauty, an exhibition celebrating French artist Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985), one of the most singular and provocative voices in postwar modern art.

Lindsey Mendick (b. 1987, London, UK) lives and works in London. She received an MA in Sculpture from the Royal College of Art, London. She was the recipient of the Alexandra Reinhardt memorial award in 2018 and was also selected for Jerwood Survey 2019. Recent solo and two-person exhibitions include: The Yellow Wallpaper, East Side Projects, Birmingham (2020); Regrets, I’ve Had a Few, SPACE, Ilford, UK (2019-2020); Of all the things I’ve lost (with Paloma Proudfoot), Ballon Rouge Club, Brussels (2019); The Ex Files, Castor Projects, London (2019); The Turnpike Pottery, The Turnpike, Leigh (2018); Perfectly Ripe, Zabludowicz Collection, London (2018); PROUDICK (with Paloma Proudfoot), Hannah Barry Gallery, London (2018); Jamie Fitzpatrick and Lindsey Mendick, Vitrine, Basel (2018); and She’s Really Nice When You Get To Know Her, Visual Arts Center, Austin, Texas (2016).
Charlotte Flint is a Curatorial Assistant at the Barbican Art Gallery, where she has worked on Jean Dubuffet: Brutal Beauty (2021), Toyin Ojih Odutola: A Countervailing Theory (2020), Lee Krasner: Living Colour (2019) and Another Kind of Life: Photography on the Margins (2018). Prior to joining the Barbican, she worked at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, as an Assistant Curator, and at the Hayward Gallery, London.
