Douglas Stuart, the Booker Prize-winning author of Shuggie Bain, will be joining us for a Guardian Live Book Club.

Shuggie Bain follows the titular main character, a young boy coming of age in 1980s Glasgow, whose growing awareness of his homosexuality coincides with his mother’s descent into alcoholism. Touching on a kaleidoscope of themes, including poverty, politics, misogyny, homophobia and addiction, Stuart’s debut novel is ultimately at its heart about the relationship between a mother and her beloved son.

Centring a Scottish, queer, working class voice, the novel won the 2020 Booker Prize, making Stuart the second Scot to win the award. As well as being a writer, Stuart, who like Shuggie grew up in Thatcher-era Glasgow, works as a fashion designer in New York. He has also written for the New Yorker and on LitHub.
This event is part of our online Book Club series, in which The Guardian’s chief books writer, Lisa Allardice, talks to leading writers about their latest novels, creative process and isolation. They will also be answering your questions, in these livestreamed events.
