Design Camp: Remake and Reuse
Organised by the Design Museum
A fun hands-on workshop that will teach you how to transform an old t-shirt or tote using embroidered and appliquéd imagery techniques.
Suitable for young people at secondary school, aged 11-14.
What to expect
We will spend time drawing and developing drawings into paper collages inspired by the work of artists like Matisse, Picasso and Sonia Delaunay as well as designs from our exhibition Design Maker User.
They will then learn how to translate these drawings into fabric designs using appliqué, hand embroidery and machine embroidery techniques. With an emphasis on up-cycled materials and sustainable techniques, this one-day workshop will teach you essential textile techniques and enable you to transform a t-shirt or tote bag into a new piece.
We will be working with repurposed fabrics sourced from Georgia Bosson’s studio production offcuts, charity shops and your home.
We encourage them to work with cloth which holds a special meaning to you for a personal touch or, if preferred, they can opt to work with blank tote bags and t-shirts that will be available for all participants.
Everyone will go home with a decorative tote bag or t-shirt which will act as a sampler for future reference when up-cycling clothes.
All equipment, materials and light refreshments will be provided, but they will need to bring a packed lunch.
Course structure
- Short visual presentation and demonstration of the techniques we will be exploring in the workshop.
- Visit to the Designer Maker User gallery to draw inspiration from the products on show and the bold graphic designs of Morag Myerscough.
- Testing design ideas through drawing and collage, establishing the layers and the core imagery.
- Choose cloth and embroidery techniques and translate the collages onto the chosen base textile.
- Appliqué core shapes onto the cloth using Bondaweb & then begin embroidery details.
- Split time between machine and hand embroidery so that everyone has a turn using both techniques.
- The class will finish with a short show & tell to celebrate the work made during the day and take away ideas for future projects.
