'BRDG’ series
‘BRDG’ consists of photographs of the iconic 6th Street Viaduct on Los Angeles. The artist captured these images just before its destruction. The viaduct bridge connects the Arts District in Downtown Los Angeles with the Boyle Heights neighbourhood. The 6th Street Viaduct is immortalised in countless films, photographs and books, including ‘Grease’. Ventourakis continues this exploration of the memory of the place through these photographs, so familiar yet no longer in existence.
The artist took the photographs in this series while in Los Angeles for his Fulbright Scholarship in 2014. This series is one of 5 photographic projects relating to his time in the city, including ‘La Petit Morte Americaine’ and ‘Motel’.
About the speakers:
Nikolas Ventourakis received a MA photography from Central St Martins, London, following his BA from TEI, Athens. He was Visiting Artist at the California Institute of Arts, as well as the recipient o the Fulbright Artist Fellowship (2014/15). His awards include winning the Deutsche Bank Award in Photography (2013); Fellowship - Niarchos Foundation (2020) and Finalist of the Celeste Prize (2013). Solo and group exhibitions include ’The Same River Twice’, Deste Foundation with New Museum at Benaki Museum, Athens; ‘Young Greek Photographers’, Thessaloniki Museum of Photography; ‘Hors Piste 14’, Centre Pompidou, Paris; Tirana Biennale; The Photographer’s Gallery, London, as well as 3rd Industrial Biennale, Istria, Croatia.
Shoair Mavlian is the Director of Photoworks, Brighton where she oversees the annual Jerwood / Photoworks Awards, Photoworks Annual and the Brighton Photo Biennial. Prior to that, she was Assistant Curator of Photography and International Art at Tate Modern, where she curated ’The Radical Eye: Modernist Photography from the Sir Elton John Collection’ (2016) amongst others.
