If you're itching to get a taste of Chinese theatre from the comfort of your own home, then why not check out this interesting production: Sacrifice.

Virtual Circle an online streaming platform brought to you by HarrisonParrott, takes you on a journey to experience the fascinating arts from the far east with this traditional Peking Opera performance.

Sacrifice is a classic Peking opera title adapted from the famous Yuan dynasty play The Orphan of Zhao, the first Chinese opera to become known in Europe.
The story centres on Chen Ying a humble court doctor who, at great personal cost, saves the life of the new born heir to the throne when the child’s family is massacred in a coup led by the feared General Tu'an Gu. But when Tu'an Gu learns that the orphan has escaped, he issues an order to kill all new born babies in the city forcing incredible sacrifices to be made by the child’s rescuer Chen Ying, and the seeds of revenge to be sown.

This performance not only focuses on the heritage and performance of this classic Peking opera for a new generation, but also includes behind the scenes footage from the rehearsals and interviews with Wang Peiyu, an important cultural figure in Peking opera in China, as well as Peking opera actors.

Performed in Mandarin, with English subtitles.
