Join us for a special event looking at new economic ideas, livestreamed from Manchester as part of Manchester International Festival.

Neoliberalism, which once promised uncontained growth under free-market capitalism, is now synonymous with austerity and privatisation. We’ve been told for decades that profit and growth are the only way but clearly, it is failing us. With huge changes already inevitable – thanks to Brexit, automation and the climate emergency – reimagining our economy is far from a leftwing fantasy. But what are the progressive ideas that can challenge the neoliberal status quo?
Economics the Blockbuster is a radical new exhibition at the Whitworth, which presents a selection of projects that operate as real-world economic systems. Responding to the themes of the show, join our panel of experts - chaired by the Guardian's Zoe Williams and including leading inequality expert Faiza Shaheen, writer and economist Stewart Lansley and Andrew Simms, political economist, campaigner and co-author of the Green New Deal - for a positive conversation about the transformative ideas that can make our economies fairer, and practical examples that show them in action.
This will be an interactive livestreamed event where you will have the opportunity to put forward your own questions and comments. If you would like to purchase an in-person ticket, please visit the MIF website here.
Economics The Blockbuster is at the Whitworth Gallery in Manchester from 30 June to 22 October. It will also be open from 5pm - 6pm for in-person guests of the event to experience before the talk. Read more about the artists involved in the show here.
