Nature writer Robert Macfarlane and musician Johnny Flynn will talk about their 2021 collaborative album, Lost in the Cedar Wood.

Loosely inspired by the 4,000-year-old Epic of Gilgamesh, in which the eponymous king destroys the Sacred Cedar Wood and brings catastrophe to the natural world, the album weaves the ancient strangeness and beauty of the earliest surviving work of literature with the contemporary disorientation of the Covid-19 pandemic and impending climate catastrophe.
The album was written between March 2020 and February 2021 – largely a correspondence between Flynn and Macfarlane, who relied on WhatsApp messages and voicenotes until they could finally meet to record it. The result is at once urgent and magical – a fusion of poetry and natural wonder born from a time in while the whole world wandered “lost in the cedar wood”.
Flynn is a singer, composer, actor and musician, and Macfarlane is the bestselling and award-winning author of multiple books about nature, including Underland and The Lost Spells. Join them with chair Emma John, as they talk about the album and take some of your questions at this livestreamed event.
