THE ROLE
Job Introduction
BBC Studios is the biggest independent producer in the UK and winner of a prestigious volume of awards. It is home to BBC Drama, BBC Entertainment, BBC Comedy and BBC Factual, and under Factual’s umbrella are the Natural History Unit, the Specialist Factual unit, the Science Unit and the Documentary Unit. The Documentary Unit is known for reputational series and singles and produces some of the most awarded and most watched factual titles in television including ‘The Met: Policing London’, ‘Sarah Everard: The Search for Justice’, ‘Grenfell: The Untold Story’, ‘Undercover Police: Hunting Paedophiles’ and the ‘Amol Rajan Interviews…’.   We're currently in production with all the main terrestrial broadcasters as well as key SVODs.
The Documentary Unit is looking for a dynamic Senior Development Producer to join the team as it heralds an ambitious new era of growth and innovation. We are looking for an experienced candidate who has a genuine passion for documentaries, who will help drive new opportunities and has proven success in both ideas generation and delivering high quality decks and proposals. You will also have demonstrable experience in progressing projects from original idea through to commission.
Working closely with the Senior Creative Director, Head of Development and the development team, the successful candidate will have a proven ability to generate documentary series and singles for both terrestrial and streamer broadcasters and a love of generating ground-breaking and innovative new ideas, as well as creating high quality decks and proposals for both the UK and international markets.
Please bear in mind that we will only consider candidates with previous experience at senior producer level in the documentaries development sphere so please do not apply if you do not have this experience.
Main Responsibilities
Reporting to the Head of Development for the Documentary Unit, the selected candidate will be confident at contributing to building an ambitious new slate of ideas that successfully map to commissioning needs.
You will also be confident straddling both the terrestrial and streamer market when creating ideas and proposals and have a wide-range of skills in the documentary sphere, from helping to shape documentary format for returnable series to building out premium and high-tariff ideas.
  • Working closely with the Head of Development and Senior Creative Director to help create and develop exciting and diverse stories and ideas.
  • Generate ideas for development showing an awareness of the domestic and international television market, across the major broadcasters and streaming platforms.
  • The ability to progress projects from original ideas through to commission.
  • Produce well-researched, crafted and compelling decks and treatments.
  • To identify and develop new talent and work effectively with existing talent.
  • Manage and direct contributions from more junior members of team to help build on ideas.
Are you the right candidate?
  • You will have relevant credits at Senior Development Producer level.
  • Proven experience in developing premium factual documentary series and singles for the UK market, and the US and streaming platform markets, such as Netflix, Amazon, Disney+ and Discovery +.
  • You will have successfully developed documentary ideas for world-famous talent for major broadcasters and streamers.
  • You will have excellent communication skills and excel at writing fast turnaround treatments.
  • Successful track record of winning access to original stories
  • Strong journalistic instincts and skills
  • You must be able to work autonomously and independently.

Salary Range:  £58,758 - £75,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience.The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external marketinsights.
