Location: Office Base is London. This is a hybrid role and the successful candidate will balance office working with home working.

Job Introduction
London is a patch like no other serving one of the largest and most diverse cities in Europe; covering some of the biggest stories. Our 6.30 evening programme, on BBC One, is regularly the most watched TV news programme in the capital. Our online stories are amongst the most read and our social media posts reach millions of people. We are now looking for a Senior (production) Journalist to join our team on twelve month contract/attachment. The ideal candidate will already have considerable experience of working in a busy multi-platform, live newsroom environment. You will be no stranger to tackling big stories, working through logistics and editorial challenges and be confident outputting live TV programmes in the gallery. While a large part of this role is TV focussed you will also spend time planning content that will be delivered to all our platforms. The successful candidate will ideally have some previous leadership experience.

Main Responsibilities
Our Senior Journalists (SJs) cover a range of roles and responsibilities including; planning our next day’s output, producing our late and weekend TV bulletins, as well as working closely alongside our Assistant Editors to help shape our flagship 6.30 evening programme. For the right candidate there’s also scope to ‘act-up’ and edit the 6.30, as well as working of-rota on special editorial projects. As part of the Local Value for All aims our SJs play an important role in liaising with all our teams and other parts of the BBC to ensure that our content travels further. Some of our SJs already have the transferable skills needed to be able work on multiple platforms. We welcome candidates with a range of experience and a good understanding of how we can maximise our offering to create impact and reach underserved audiences.
Are you the right candidate?
  • You’ll already work in a multiplatform newsroom environment and have considerable live gallery output experience.
  • You will know what makes a good story, rooted in London and the surrounding area and know how to develop the editorial to suit the needs of all our platforms.
  • You will have sound editorial judgement and a good working knowledge of media law and be an excellent communicator and problem solver.
  • You will also have experience of working independently and be confident leading small teams.
