BoCA

Biennial of Contemporary Arts

About

BoCA is a non-profit structure, founded in 2015, based in Lisbon. Through a transdisciplinary perspective, of hybridization and breaking of boundaries, contemporary creation is the neural part of its mission. It focuses on transdisciplinarity and develops a diverse cultural ecosystem based on synergies between cities (since Lisbon, intersections with other Portuguese and foreign cities are established), between cultural equipments (museums, theaters, galleries, heritage facilities, etc.) and the public space, between artistic territories (performance, performing arts, visual arts and music) and between their respective audiences. BoCA develops its activities through five axes: • commission and production of artistic projects; • regular programming; • programming of the contemporary arts biennial BoCA; • national and international diffusion; • education program. With John Romão’s executive and artistic direction, BoCA arises from a desire to contribute consistently to the reflection on the contemporary socio-cultural environment and with the explicit vocation to support the processes of artistic construction of the present and the future. BoCA commissioned new works by: Tania Bruguera, Meg Stuart, Rodrigo García, Arca, Marlene Monteiro Freitas, Alexandra Pirici, Cao Fei, Gerard & Kelly, Tânia Carvalho, Pedro Barateiro, Horácio Frutuoso, Angélica Liddell, João Maria Gusmão & Pedro Paiva, Gabriel Ferrandini, Diana Policarpo, among others.
