Lisa Lutgen’s work explores identity by playfully interrogating experiences from her multicultural heritage, hence the alias Spicykraut*. She uses the female form in motion to capture her psyche, and combines serious topics peppered with uplifting commentary to inform audiences and spark meaningful, inquisitive dialogue. *Spicykraut = Lutgen has personified the culinary essentials of her Malaysian-German roots. Malaysian food is rich in flavour and often spicy. “Kraut” is short for “sauerkraut” (sour cabbage), a popular German national dish, and a slur for German soldiers during the war.
