18th December is a sound art installation that aims to raise awareness and highlight issues of the Mediterranean migration crisis, recreating the immigrants’ experiences and bringing this theme out of Italian boundaries. It is an immersive experience; the audience can interact with three posters illustrating three stories of immigrant’s trips from the Mediterranean Sea. By touching on a particular point of
the posters linked with a special device (Playtronica), the user can start a binaural soundtrack (different for every story) and completely immerse itself in the experience.
The soundtracks are recorded in binaural; this means that the sounds are recorded using two different microphones installed inside the two ears of a dummy head to recreate the natural effect of listening. For this reason, headphones are essential to have a more powerful impact with a clear distinction between left and right perspectives.
