3ska - youth magazine design

  • Isabella Bubola

3ska was the last magazine for youth and written by youth in the county of Istria. It was published by ZUM, an NGO that formed in the early 2000s, where I worked as a graphic designer and project assistant for two years. REDESIGN For the magazine’s redesign, I followed these guidelines: 1. SIMPLICITY Simplicity and minimalism of structure, enhanced with youthful visuals. The inspiration was the simplicity of today’s smartphone apps used on a large scale by young people. 2. LESS STOCK Instead of using a lot of stock, I created photographs, illustrations and collages that I used in the magazine, thus giving it more authenticity. 3. HANDMADE Handmade feels as a breath of fresh air in the age saturated with purely digital, and young people are becoming more interested in analogue media (such as Polaroid, silkscreen or riso print). That is why I included hand-lettering, hand-cut collages and illustrations that were drawn using traditional media like ink and pencils.

The making of included a lot of handdrawing work, from typography to sketches and illustrations that were later vectorised in Adobe Illustrator.
However, these handdrown elements kept their organic shapes to give a slightly more ''analog'' feel to the magazine.
