4D Luminaire in collaboration with Plumen

  • Abigail Ball
In collaboration with Plumen, the creators of the 001 lamp, I was chosen to design a state of the art exhibition luminaire for my final year project. Inspired by Plumen’s futuristic design style, 3D printing technology and smart materials.
When the light is turned on an organic transformation begins to occur, utilising the lost heat from the 001 lamp. The colour change flares up the 3D printed geometric structure, designed to fit modular to Plumen’s existing fittings acting as a large fractal heat sink, changing the black surface to a vibrant colour spectrum.
This effect is achieved through the application of liquid crystal ink to the surface of the black ABS printed part, changing as the surface temperature reaches 25-30 degrees Celsius.
Tools & Software Used: Solidworks, Keyshot Rendering, 3D Printing, Bespoke lighting design, Smart Materials – SFXC, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Dissertation document printed with Pixart Printing.
