A Contemporary Insight Into The World Of Ballet

Until recently ballet has been a predominately white industry, neglecting those of colour and preventing opportunities for them to thrive. Women of colour deserve a platform to have their voice heard and shed light on a topic which until recently has been in the shadows. Through social media I have been fortunate to be able to contact some of these dancers and for them to tell me their stories directly. Through this piece I hope to voice the struggles which dancers have faced, as well as the progressions which these women believe are being made. Further highlighting how we as a society must continue to strive for inclusion and representation within ballet.

167mm X 290mm, Perfect Bound, 60 pgs. The publication features 14 interviews with dancers of colour,  presented alongside photographs, pull out quotes and elements of augmented reality, bringing the photographs to life. Purple is a colour associated with representing the progressions made within women’s rights and famously used in the novel ‘The Color Purple’ based on the representation of women of colour.  This has been used within the publication to draw out key phrases said within the interviews.
