Animation TATA is a one-minute opening animation for a documentary project, Safe Distance (Jamie Chi, 2021). Combining hand-drawn animation and experimental printings on thermal papers, the animation film presents a series of visual puzzles exploring themes of gender, identity and discrimination. The title TATA comes from the music the sound artist JinYing Li composed for this film. As the personal pronouns for “She” and “He” both pronounce “Ta” in the Chinese language, “Ta Ta” in the animation is not just music beats, but also implies the relationship between genders and communities. Exhibited in Bishopgate Institute, London [16 Sep 2021] Queer Chinese Art Festival, London [28 Aug - 6 Sep 2021] - Animation TATA screenings. Contemplation by Modern Youth, Chengdu, China [4 Oct - 10 Oct 2021] - Animation TATA screenings.
