I was commissioned by Broccoli Content to contribute to Anthems Home – "a collection of 31 original manifestos, speeches, stories, poems and meditations written and voiced by people all over the world". Writers were asked to choose a word of the day to offer listeners, together with our interpretation. I chose to riff on this idea of "belonging". Home as something other than a specific place or destination. It could be corporeal, a feeling of residing comfortably within yourself. Our skin as a sanctuary, instead of a cage. I find it interesting how so many of us have felt unsettled and adrift of late, despite now spending more time in our actual homes. Perhaps that is because this pause has been enforced on us, not chosen, and we have been confronted by ourselves like never before. In isolation, all our mixed emotions and muddled ways are no longer masked by the terminal velocity of modern life. As we pass through this portal between what once was and what could be, it is up to each of us to redefine our essence, our identity, and where we best reside.
