A lady stepped out of the house we arrived to wearing color coordinated orange graphic tees and orange pants; she opened the gates to her sister's house and let us in before sitting at the sofa. "well, make yourselves at home and tell me where you want my photos to be taken," the lady said; she is Arahmaiani, a prolific and storied artist spending much of her time evading authorities between countries. Within the last couple of years, the question of identity continued to surface over the indonesian ideological landscape, and for Jurnal Ruang, Arahmaiani with her situationally noamdic lifestyle was a perfect person to chat with. Over the next several hours we would talk about her first couple of run ins with Indonesian authority, her escape outside of Indonesia, and her works around the world.
