Arenas del Recuerdo

From the beginning of time and across cultures, humans have dealt with grief by paying homage to their beloved and deceased family members. Seaside cemeteries have become a symbol of eternal rest and peace. I have always been fascinated by the locations (in the outskirts, overlooking the sea), the elaborate souvenirs, flowers, and trinkets surrounding the burials… the symbolic overload of these monuments move me in their attempt to materialize inevitable loss and grief. The images captured in this zine are part of an ongoing photographic project that captures and records marine cemeteries' humanity. They were taken during five years bringing together in this publication burials from all over the world — France, Spain, Mexico, Bermuda… It's printed as an extremely limited edition of 50 copies and sold here. 25% of proceeds will be donated to Final Farewell, an NGO that provides families with an affordable funeral for a loved child.
