Art Underground - Virtual Exhibition (Open Art 2017)

  • Nathan Taylor

A virtual art exhibition that descends into the tunnels of an underground railway system. This project was produced in 2017 BC (Before Curat10n), as part of a community art project called "Open Art". IT features artwork from more than 70 artists, mostly from London and the wider United Kingdom. This project sowed the seeds for a new virtual arts company and led to the founding of Curat10n.

The exhibition begins above ground, in a small exhibition space. This is an accurate recreation of the Cass Arts gallery space in London. The virtual gallery was displayed alongside real work from the exhibition, as part of a 2-week show in 2017.
Visitors can then descend into an imaginary undergound world, inspired by the London Underground rail network. The escalators are replaced with long wooden staircases leading down to the station platforms.
The platforms provide plenty of space for showing artwork at a large scale. Materials and lighting are a lot cleaner and brighter than in reality, with chrome rails, wood flooring and polished concrete walls.
Visitors can walk onto the tracks and into the tunnels. Artwork is displayed in alcoves along the walls, giving artists a unique space in which to show their work.
The tunnel network offers multiple routes, and connects visitors between the two station platform. This allows people to navigate in a loop and view all the artwork on show without getting lost along the way.
This was Curat10n's first project, and things have come a long way since.
