Asahi Heritage Minute

  • Sarah Reader

Heritage Minutes are an institution. First released in 1991 they are one-minute long bilingual films that showcase core moments of Canada’s history in cinemas, on TV and online. It was an absolute honor to tell the story of the Vancouver Asahi Baseball team, with the last living player Kaye Kaminishi narrating. From 1914-1941, the Vancouver Asahi were one of the city's most dominant amateur baseball teams, winning multiple league titles in Vancouver and along the Northwest Coast. In 1942, after Canada declared war on Japan, 22,000 Japanese Canadians were interned in the interior of BC, including the Asahi players.
