Back in the Spring, I was clicking through TV channels when I stumbled on the 2015 version of “Far From The Madding Crowd” - a film I’d never actually seen. As soon as I started watching, I was hooked. I love a period drama, but this was REALLY beautiful, and I felt immediately inspired. A few days later, I still couldn’t get it out of my head. I knew I needed to create something to reflect how the film made me feel. This short fashion film (and the images that accompany it, which I will share soon) are the result of that inspiration hit! Fraser Stephen and I spent weeks discussing and analysing the film. We poured over endless ‘period drama’ tracks on music libraries. When we discovered something we liked, we meticulously planned how we could construct the shots and use movement from the camera and our model to mirror the music and slowly build (then release) tension in our film (as is done so brilliantly in Far From The Madding Crowd). A few of my favourite moments: the little “ding” in Ella’s earring as the light hits it perfectly (we spent a long time getting that right), the subtle wind and nature sounds we wove in to create a more immersive viewing experience for the viewer and Ella’s fantastic dramatic walk to camera in her beige coat. A huge thank you to the team of Vingt Sept Magazine for letting us all create this for you, and to the whole team who so happily came on board with my idea, and made it so much better than I could have ever done on my own.
