A New Blood Wood Pencil Winning Project, We give our data away too often, without knowing where it goes or its environmental impact. Young people want to engage in the anonymous world of data and want more control of their personal data. The only way of accessing your data is through Apple Screentime, however it is difficult to access and it is not engaging. In our sample group of 16-24 year olds, we found through testing the group that not one person could find how to access Screentime on their iPhone without being guided. Our solution was to gamify screen time and make data more accessible, so we created BBC Trace. An app that transforms users data into an interactive body map. The app aims to • Inform users on their data footprint. • Educate users on ways to reduce their emission •To protect their personal data. •To reduce the impact of data on the environment The app uses data from Screentime to translate users data into an interactive body map, with colours representing different categories of data. The user can use the Data Key to understand their data emission and make adjustments utilising it as a Data Checklist to improve their score. The less data emitted, the lower the score. When goals are reached the user gains BBC rewards.
