BITE BACK FASHION LTD ®

  • Katherine Penny

I created this fashion brand during university, as part of my final major project. I wanted to unleash my creative style, whilst highlighting societal issues and making an impact. Inspired by the punk movement back in the 70s and modern-day feminism, these are some elements that help shaped BiteBackFashion. Here is my artist's statement, giving further insight into my brand's background, purpose and aspirations: A brand that’s built upon real change; not just box-ticking exercise, BiteBackFashion strives to tackle body positivity in a twisted and shocking way. From being a final major project at University, BiteBackFashion aspires to not only be a body-positive fashion brand but also a movement….and it's personal. I believe there’s still a gap in the high-street fashion market because so few fashion brands have produced body positivity campaigns. It’s good that at least some brands are recognizing that beauty standards and body shaming is toxic and harms mental health, but so much more needs to be done. For years, the fashion industry has exacerbated body trends, using them to promote and sell their products. This is why I want my brand to be straight to the point and shake this industry. I’m fed up with the sugar-coated-ness I see in magazines and online advertising. The message isn’t going in; the dark side of body image and low self-esteem needs to be addressed, highlighted and counteracted. My fashion brand has a punk aesthetic throughout, with an accompanying logo and feisty feminist tagline. The garments have shocking, confrontational graphic content, visually communicating direct messages from the wearer to the world. Join the Revolution and BITE BACK!

BiteBackFashion Logo Design

Using insults on the garments, it's a counteractive way of giving insults less meaning and converting verbal abuse into fashion. A strategy that BiteBackFashion uses to end body shaming and the negativity surrounding body image. These insults are also things that I've been called in the past.

About the design:
This garment contains ransom-style lettering from high-end fashion brands - (which are pretty, pristine, and neat) are then used to create offensive insults. The insults are accompanied by the tagline "BITE BACK!" which is used to counteract this.
About The Design:

Don't Be a Statistic! | The typography on these dresses contains data and statistics about body image and the impact it has on young people's mental health. I came across this data whilst researching body image and it's shocking. Therefore I wanted to reveal the data via the garments, revealing the correlation between mental health and body image.

About the Design:

Can't Win | Leaving in a society where we are constantly judged based on our appearance, it feels like you can't win no matter what shape or size you are. From being fat-shamed to skinny-shamed, it's no wonder young people feel unsatisified with their body image.
In addition, these dresses are designed to show how social media is fuelling a mental health crisis. BiteBackFashion aims to reveal the ugly truth around body image and how normalised it is body shame.
BiteBackFashion Brochure Cover.
Edgy, Explicit, Confrontational and Punk!
The typography on the spread is ransom style lettering - a typographic style that's often seen in punk aestheics. I love the cut and paste style and I believe it's coherent with the brand.
Each design is a combination of digital and analogue graphics that were laid-out in Adobe Indesign. The scribbles and textures were scanned in, edited in Photoshop, and placed onto the brochure design. This is a reflection of my signature design process.
Can't Win | This garment contains shocking comments I often find on social media, and things I've heard in passing. In addition, I've been body-shamed countless times, and my mother was body-shamed by her very own mother. Therefore, some insults are personal to me. So this element is the emotional and more personal side of the brand.

Why is the model holding an umbrella?
The model is holding an umbrella to symbolise counteraction - The dress works as force field against body shaming and nasty comments.
