Thoughts on Black History Month.

“I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change. I am changing the things I cannot accept.” ― Angela Davis
1 October 2020. Today’s the start of a brand new month. And in the UK, it’s #BlackHistoryMonth!
This month is a time to deliberately focus our minds towards Black #culture, #creation, and #innovations while remembering Black communities’ global influence on #civilisation. There's an immense amount to be proud about all year round. But for this month (and this year in particular), let’s be intentional about Black communities history, their current day, and their future happiness. Black History is here to stay.
We wish to highlight (and not forget) more than anything else the history and contribution of Black #Disabled people as well. The world often forgets about this community (and the struggled they face with #racism and #ableism daily), but we won’t. ♿️
To our Black Disabled Sisters and Brothers (whom Sulaiman considers as a part of his Disabled global family), thank you for all the “richness” you bring daily into the world too. We see you. We hear you. We feel you. And we are always here for you.
[Side-note: About 50% of all police brutality is that of Black Disabled people so we won’t silence Black Disabled people. We also know we’re not very active on social media (our internalised ableism hits us hard, and we prefer to do actual deep work for disabled creativity IRL). Still, we would also like to give a shoutout to Black disabled business owners and Black disability-led businesses. And two British Black Disabled people we love (and support) are The Triple Cripples and Matilda Ibini. And our Founder & Chief Purpose Officer Sulaiman Khan wishes to highlight, after attending the #Design for #Inclusion programme via Fearless Futures last week, the importance of working towards #equity and #intersectionality in business (and the world). That’s why #BlackDisabledLivesMatter this month and every day until there’s justice for all.]
Thus, this month and every day of the year (now and forever), please remember to include the stories and lived-experience of Black Disabled people in your events and content, as well as ensuring all your events (virtual or not) and content are accessible and fully accommodating of accessibility for disabled people.
Also, please remember disabled people (especially BIPOC Disabled folx — #DisabilityTooWhite) need your support of Black Disabled people and the ongoing fight for justice to have Black Disabled people’s humanity and rights regarded as equitable. Join us in solidarity as an accomplice. ✊✊✊✊✊
Though relating to the #BlackLivesMatter movement (but can apply to the #DisabilityJustice movement as well), after seeing a Tweet in June by Mikki Kendall (@karnythia) I now believe, whether in #work or #society, we (#disabled people) need accomplices instead:
“We don't need allies, we need accomplices. Fighting oppression isn't a spectator sport. Allies cheer you on, accomplices wade in to fight too.” — Mikki Kendall
