Inspired by Book 3 of the Innocent series, using the information from the Death Penalty Information Centre DPIC, I decided to create a pack of traditional playing cards. Using the same principles as the book, the race of the individual are indicated as either white or black paper stock, with African American, Latino, American Native and Other race, using black and Caucasian indicated in white. The numbers on the cards indicate the time incarcerated, along with the inmates name, and I have used a foil colour key for each race; black on white for Caucasian; white on black for African American, silver on black for Latino, matt gold for other race, and gloss gold for American Native. Inmates play a number of games in prison, but the most popular are Kaluki, a form of rummy, also known as Jamaican rummy, Poker and Blackjack. Books and a deck of cards are the two most popular items for death row inmates.
