Bo & Birdy at Kimpton Blythswood Square Hotel

  • Sandy Mackenzie

I was invited to attend the launch party of the brand new Bo & Birdy Restaurant in the heart of Glasgow's Kimpton Blythswood Square Hotel. The look for this event was originally inspired by peacocks and flamingos. The decor of the new restaurant is reminiscent of peacocks and the hotel boasts a campiness to it which is largely reflected in flamingos. The gown was hand-sewn over four consecutive days following a three-day design process. The wig was then sculpted over one day with the design being more spontaneous. My aim for the hair was to add an element of disruption to a classic silhouette. Similarly the concept for the entire piece was based on a celebration of being queer and a celebration of being an individual which is largely reflective of the Kimpton brand and it's employees (including Scotland's first female executive chef). Overall the final look achieved it's purpose and made for some great selfie-moments with guests and a chance to introduce them to the art of drag.
