I was approached to create visuals for an issue of Slovak culture magazine KAPITAL. The August 2020 issue was dedicated to Alexandra Kollontai - a female Russian revolutionary, politician and diplomat. Kollontai didn't fit the mould of a Russian female activist, whether it was her personal life, her politics or even the way she dressed. I chose to portray her legacy through photographic abstraction, using my physical subjectivity as a means of expression. These works balance between the abstract and the symbolic. They are both metaphorical and personal. The female form is layered, de/re-constructed, contorted; through hazy layers, the viewer might catch a glance, but never be fully satisfied with a straightforward picture. It exists in a constant tension between the performance of femininity and the authenticity of the body existing in the space.
