British Museum Rebranding Project (FMP)

  • Andrew Finnie
For my Final Major Project I chose to rebrand the world famous British Museum. As the world's fourth most visited attraction and the visitor site in the UK it was very important to create an image that represented the brand, the ethos and culture of this amazing institution. With over 8 million items in it's collection, architecture from Ancient Greece through to the modern day and an infamous facade there were a lot of visual assets to consider.
For my brand mark I split the idenity into two main components. The main type logo contains elements in Gill Sans and Trajan with a modified 'B' for flair and idenity. The secondary illustrative mark takes its form from the museum's building and is a very simple representation of this iconic structure.
I used deep woods, limestone and neutral colours set against a rich, earthy orange. These materials and colours came from the collection and the architecture and meant everything I created should compliment what already exists.
My outcomes icluded mockups of the physical spaces, wayfinding and signange within the museum. An online presence including social media. A member's pack with membership cards, museum leaflets including comprehensive guide and a user friendly pocket map. Examples of these can be seen below
