Broken yet Healed

  • Rachel Stewart

The sphere made of broken ceramics was influenced by ancient Islamic objects that were decorated with perfect geometrical patterns representing the infinity of the universe and inviting to reflect on life and god. The space in between the shapes was known as the “space for god” which symbolizes the worship of Allah. The cracks are filled with gold paint which embodies the Japanese philosophy called “Wabi-Sabi” a concept of accepting your imperfections and embracing life. The sphere has a metaphysical function, during the making I noticed that by trying to perfect the sphere I defied its connotation. Therefore, by removing the symmetry of the patterns, we redefine beauty and perfection for human nature. In the end, we understand that the object is more beautiful than having been broken.
