Challenging the notions of Black masculinity

  • Afra Bailey

A still from my first short film. Expressing and acknowledging the limitations that black masculinity comes with an overarching narrative that communicates self-discovery and individualism. This project was all about outlining issues and pressures that surround Black Masculinity. The approach I used was all about challenging the audience(s) process of thinking through spoken-word poetry and using this as a platform for them to identify what their definition of masculinity is and what it can be. I used my research skills to cultivate key insights that enabled me to develop the creative concept. This resulted in the final execution: a short visual in collaboration with spoken-word poet Timi Ol.
