Character Act

  • Amy Hart

For this project I created a series of characters inspired by gender, sexuality and race. I wanted these characters to defy the societal norms of every day pop culture. My main aim way to create these characters so that people feel they have representation. I created them in a MET gala inspired environment so that I could explore more creative ways of expressing their different personalities through fashion. One of the ways I chose to represent my characters was by making them into dolls. I did them by paper as an example of what the dolls would be like if they were made into real dolls. They would be collectibles and something different to the every day barbie and Bratz doll you see. The final way I chose to represent my characters were in more of a fashion/pop culture influencer way. This was aimed at an older audience and is how I image the characters to be portrait in their own world. I feel as though big fashion magazines and company don’t represent enough diversity, this was something I wanted to really represent in my work that we need to show more acceptance and equality throughout mainstream media and societal expectations.
