'Viasat Film Christmas’ - Animation

Christmas is an opportunity to add a whole lot of fun to your on air look. Recalling Christmas cartoons of old, I wanted to animate 2D characters exploring a 3D world for this new batch of Christmas idents on Viasat Film HD. We loved the idea that these characters were illustrations from the wrapping paper, having adventures in your living room after dark. For us it brought back the old school magic, whilst really engaging with our audience.
Working on concept, moodboards, styleframes, art direction and then co-producing & co-directing the idents with the awesome Bridie Reid, I approached the very talented Louis Neubert to realise our characters. Louis was a dream to work with, a super talented illustrator and animator. Go check out his work (louisneubert.co.uk/) To build it all we worked with the lovely folk at Studio Hansa (studiohansa.com/), who created the 3D world, and brought months of work to life.
Once we decided on our wrapping paper concept, we were tasked with finding the best way to execute the idea. We decided to initially animate the characters in Flash, add textures to each frame in Photoshop, and then import these frames into After Effects. The 3D living room was created in Cinema 4D, and once we had figured out our shots, we created a dummy 3D animatic. This ensured that when each character was being animated in Flash, we knew they would seamlessly interact with the 3D environment.
