For their 10th anniversary, Clerkenwell Design Week wanted to celebrate the history of the area and bring its stories to life by creating vinyl manifestations along the route. Location: Farringdon Station: The station is known as the world’s first underground railway which was constructed using the cut and cover method. The technique involved the excavation of a trench which is then covered over with backfilled material. At the time (the 60s) electrical machines did not exist, therefore the excavation and filling was a handmade process that was achieved with the hard work of men and tools such as a shovel, hand shovel, wheelbarrows, pick mattocks, steel and bricks. The illustration celebrates the work of the people involved in the construction of the tunnel and aims to attract people to interact with it and share it on social media.
