Coral Gardeners

  • Emilie Frontera

Through restoration and education, Coral Gardeners' association seeks to raise awareness and fight against coral bleaching in French Polynesia. Coral reefs are the oceans' lungs, they absorb a huge part of CO2 rejections and transform it into the oxygen we breathe. If nothing is done right now, it is estimated that by 2050 all coral reefs will disappear. Because of global warming, pollution and other human activities already caused the death of half of them. In 2016, I met Titouan and, with another activist based in France, we decided to change the game and create the Coral Gardeners association. We launched a crowdfunding campaign to enable people to adopt a coral and have dead coral collected in Mo'orea transplanted into nurseries, in order to give reefs a new life. We organise conferences and interactions with the public and schools to educate about coral reefs and how to save them. The project has quickly gained important international coverage with support from many major public figures (Ben Thouard, Jack Johnson, Shark Girl Madison, Florent Manaudou...). +45k followers on Instagram.
