DAT SUCRE - sassy decorated cookies

  • Geneviève Higgins-Desbiens

January 2018. I was sitting alone in my apartment, dreadfully looking at my calendar. Realizing how, yet again, I'd be single on Valentine's Day. Not that I cared. But that day, my latest Tinder date told me how he had just met someone else, and wanted to end our (very) short and (VERY) casual relationship. So yeah, I felt like a big pile of crap that night. I walked into my kitchen, trying to find chocolate, lollies, anything that could ease my bad mood. Instead, I found in one of my drawers a heart-shaped cookie cutter. You know how some entrepreneurs talk about their "ah-ah!" moment? Well that was mine. The cookie cutter sparked an idea. Two hours later, I finished baking heart-shaped cookies that featured passive-agressive messages: "Ok. Bye", "We need to talk.", "I ghosted him", "It's not me. It's you"... I was pouring my feelings on colorful royal icing. Fast-forward to January 2019. I've officially launched DAT SUCRE in Montreal (Canada), which specializes in funky, sassy and edgy decorated cookies. No, my cookies won't feature easy puns like "I love you a latte" on a biscuit shaped like a mug. Yes, you will find passive-agressive sentences on them, or even your fave artist's face turned into a delicious treat. DAT SUCRE is all about disrupting a sweet industry that can be... well, a little too sweet. And so far, this side hustle has been doing pretty good: partnerships with brands like W Hotel or Creative Mornings, custom creations for world-renowned artists like Fat Joe, Snoop Dog, A$AP Rocky and Migos... It's been good. Real good.
