Defended Coastline

  • SARAH MANNING

My final major project collection ‘Defended Coastline’ aims to connect the consumer back with the coastline through biophilic design (bringing references to nature indoors to enhance well-being). Changes in societal norms have led to more people defending their well-being through the practice of self-care. Research into biophilic design shows experiences at the coast positively affect people’s well-being. Therefore, ‘Defended Coastline’ aims to rebuild this connection by bringing the colours and textures on man-made surfaces along the coastline into people’s homes through the production of environmentally sustainable woven fabrics for the affordable luxury market.

The textures created on coastal man-made objects convey a powerful sense of colour, detail and interest. This project encapsulates these textures.
Mixed medium textural painting
Paintings for Defended Coastline were created intuitively, letting go of an expectation and attachment to a predetermined result; this echoes the natural formation of the coastline. This design demonstrates experimentation with the application of paint and a mixture of materials.
