Doppelganger:My Shadow Self

  • Yanjun Chen

This work was created to tell the story of the impact that China's one child has had on the younger generation, especially on me personally, and the poetic fantasies, contradictions and conflicts that have been born out of this impact. This work is influenced by the theories of psychologist Carl Jung, capturing my thoughts and allowing my creativity to flow like blue water, encouraging me to be more honest with my shadow self. The piece was drawn in procreate and colored in photoshop. This series won the Student Work category at the 64th Communication Arts International Illustration Competition and was selected for the 64th CA Illustration Yearbook. The following month it was awarded Runner-up in the 71st Creative Quarterly and will be featured in the CQ71 magazine to be published this summer. Do you occasionally feel like another person is living inside of you? Or maybe some moments you feel like you have more than one face? This is a poem about me and my inner shadow friend, as well as a journey of self-discovery and facing the truth.
