Dover Protest

  • Theo McInnes
On Saturday 30th of January 2016 Dover town witnessed its third far-right protest in just over a year with the “Return to Dover” march taking place throughout its streets. Everyone from EDL splinter groups to Mein Kampf indoctrinated neo-nazis, were set to parade through Dover in opposition to refugees arriving on our shoreline. But it was never going to be a Nazi walk in the park, as anti’s mobilised under the banners of the Anti Fascist Network and Kent Against Racism. The protest was expected to be the biggest and most tempestuous yet as the anti-fascists prepared to stop the far-right in their tracks, seemingly by whatever means necessary. The far-right, tanked up on a cocktail of Special Brew and contempt, met the anti-fascists head on, with every police officer in Kent trying to prevent the ensuing bloodshed. Amidst the flying fists, bricks and improvised weaponry I took a step back to photograph the riot that followed, and to ask people about our responsibilities as British citizens in confronting the modern day migrant crisis.
