Eaton Centre is a retail destination and office complex located in the heart of Downtown Toronto. Formed by a combination of streets, squares, public transport, and over 300 stores and restaurants makes it North America’s busiest shopping mall with around 50 million visitors in 2015 alone, attracting more than any other tourist attraction in Ontario and far exceeding the total passenger count of Canada’s largest and busiest airport. Being a key point of the site it’s important that navigation and sense of place are established within this ‘linear maze’ with one wrong move possibly costing commuters’ valuable time. The aim was to design and implement a wayfinding system that seamlessly connects the retail environment with the scheme’s streets, squares, and public transit whilst incentivising the flow of traffic for both commuters and visitors.
