How far have we come in 2018 in gender equality?
The average male tax payer earns £25,700 a year while female counterparts earn just £20,300…
We believe there is no better way to draw attention to the gender pay gap currently plaguing the advertising industry then by filming a social experiment, which reveals the glaring discrepancy and asks the simple question – why?
THE CONCEPT We’ve been talking about equal pay for over 70 years. The law has enforced it for almost 50. And yet, women still get paid less across 370 of the 426 job classifications in the UK. And more often than not, it’s a lot less. Our industry is just as guilty. The Drum recently published an article on WPP’s pay gap report. It found a gap of 14.6 % across all participating advertising agencies between the genders – some were worse than others.
THE CALL Produced by Marcie MacLellan, Rebecca Rowntree and in partnership with She Says and The Drum, we are ‘casting’ in the UK for a filmed experiment directed by Frank & Lively, an award-winning production company. We are still looking for male and female volunteers to willingly share their salary with a complete stranger of the opposite gender.
HOLD UP… BEFORE YOU GO ANYWHERE… YOU DO NOT NEED TO REVEAL YOUR SALARY TO THE WORLD (OR EVEN THE CREW). JUST TO EACH OTHER. WE WANT TO FILM THE REACTION TO THE GAP, NOT THE GAP ITSELF.
We will capture your reaction as you see, for the first time for most, how big (or small) the gender gap is for you.
It shouldn’t feel like a cultural taboo to talk about money – especially in this context. Your participation will create transparency, which will enable us to create debate and spot the inequalities still in force in today’s workplace.
If willing, please feel free to submit a colleague of the opposite gender and equivalent position to participate in this experiment. All genders at all levels across all media are welcome.
Please spread the word on your social platforms - we need to reach as many people as we can.
